13-15TroubleshootingChapter 13Troubleshooting■ Errors occur frequently while sending.The telephone lines may be in poor condition, or you may have a badconnection.• Lower the transmission speed (1 TX START SPEED, p. 14-10).Receiving Problems■ Cannot receive a fax automatically.The FAX may not be set to receive automatically.• For the FAX to receive faxes automatically, the receive mode must be set toFAX ONLY MODE, Fax/Tel Mode, ANS.MACHINE MODE, or NET SWITCH*(1 Chapter 8). If you have set ANS.MACHINE MODE, confirm that ananswering machine is connected to the FAX and that it is turned on with anoutgoing message properly recorded (1 p. 8-10).The FAX may have a document stored in memory, leaving little or nomemory available.• Print, send, or delete any documents stored in memory (1 p. 9-5).An error may have occurred during reception.• Check the LCD for an error message (1 p. 13-8).• Print an ACTIVITY REPORT and check for an error code (1 p. 11-3).The multi-purpose tray may be empty.• Make sure paper is loaded in the multi-purpose tray (1 p. 2-16).The telephone line cord may not be connected properly.• Make sure it is connected properly (1 p. 2-6).■ No automatic switching between telephone and fax calls.The FAX may not be set to switch automatically between telephone and faxcalls.• For the FAX to switch automatically, the receive mode must be set to Fax/Tel Mode, ANS.MACHINE MODE, or NET SWITCH* (1 Chapter 8). If youhave set ANS.MACHINE MODE, confirm that an answering machine isconnected to the FAX and that it is turned on with an outgoing messageproperly recorded (1 p. 8-10).The FAX may have a document stored in memory, leaving little or nomemory available.• Print, send, or delete any documents stored in memory (1 p. 9-5).NoteIf none of these solutions solve the problem, unplug the FAX and wait for at least fiveseconds.
