5TroubleshootingIf you have trouble initializing or getting aposition fix, check the following:Does the receiver have a clear view of thesky?If there are large buildings or mountains, orif there is heavy tree cover, the receiver may notbe receiving enough satellite signals to calculatea fix. Also, if you’re using the GPS 12 MAP on acar dash, make sure the unit is placed so that ithas the clearest possible view of the sky. YourGPS will only be able to detect satellites that itcan “see” through your vehicle’s windshield.Depending on the slope of your dash or theoverall surface area of the window, it may benecessary to mount an external antenna on yourvehicle’s roof or trunk in order to give the unit abetter view of the sky. (Contact your localGARMIN dealer and inquire about the GA 27low-profile remote antenna, part number 010-10052-03.)Have you selected the right area wheninitializing?Check for the correct approximate positionon the Map Page. Press PAGE until the MapPage appears, or reselect your approximatelocation to restart the initialization.Have you moved more than 500 miles fromthe last calculated position with thereceiver off?Reinitialize the receiver by selecting yourapproximate position on the map, or select‘AutoLocate’ from the Satellite Status Pageoptions (see page 27).To turn the GPS 12 MAP back on, press andhold the red power key.GETTING STARTEDInitializationOnce the GPS 12 MAPhas a position fix, it willautomatically transitionfrom the Satellite StatusPage to the Map Page.
