Chapter 8. Problem determinationUse the information in this section to isolate and resolve issues that you might encounter while using yourserver.Lenovo servers can be configured to automatically notify Lenovo Support if certain events are generated.You can configure automatic notification, also known as Call Home, from management applications, such asthe Lenovo XClarity Administrator. If you configure automatic problem notification, Lenovo Support isautomatically alerted whenever a server encounters a potentially significant event.To isolate a problem, you should typically begin with the event log of the application that is managing theserver:• If you are managing the server from the Lenovo XClarity Administrator, begin with the Lenovo XClarityAdministrator event log.• If you are using some other management application, begin with the Lenovo XClarity Controller event log.Web resources• Tech tipsLenovo continually updates the support website with the latest tips and techniques that you can use tosolve issues that your server might encounter. These Tech Tips (also called retain tips or service bulletins)provide procedures to work around issues or solve problems related to the operation of your server.To find the Tech Tips available for your server:1. Go to http://datacentersupport.lenovo.com and navigate to the support page for your server.2. Click on How To’s from the navigation pane.3. Click Article Type ➙ Solution from the drop-down menu.Follow the on-screen instructions to choose the category for the problem that you are having.• Lenovo Data Center Forum– Check https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Datacenter-Systems/ct-p/sv_eg to see if someone else hasencountered a similar problem.Event logsAn alert is a message or other indication that signals an event or an impending event. Alerts are generated bythe Lenovo XClarity Controller or by UEFI in the servers. These alerts are stored in the Lenovo XClarityController Event Log. If the server is managed by the Lenovo XClarity Administrator, alerts are automaticallyforwarded to this management application.Note: For a listing of events, including user actions that might need to be performed to recover from anevent, see the Messages and Codes Reference, which is available at https://pubs.lenovo.com/sr665-v3/pdf_files.Lenovo XClarity Controller event logThe Lenovo XClarity Controller monitors the physical state of the server and its components using sensorsthat measure internal physical variables such as temperature, power-supply voltages, fan speeds, andcomponent status.
