137Starting and drivingRunning-inPistons, bores and bearings need time tobed in, to obtain uniform, wear-resistant sur-faces.If a new engine is driven too hard, thisgradual process of bedding-in will not bepossible and the life of the engine will beshortened.Cars with petrol engine: during the first2000 km do not exceed 5000 rpm.Cars with diesel engine: during the first5000 km do not exceed 4000 rpm.In addition, refrain from driving the car at fullthrottle, other than for brief instances, during the first 1800 miles (3000 km).Bedding-in of new brake liningThe bedding-in period for new brake liningis about 150 km if the car is driven mainly inurban traffic or about 500 km for mainlymotorway driving. To avoid premature wear and shorteningthe life of the pads, avoid heavy braking asmuch as possible during this period.Manual gearboxWhen changing gear, fully depress theclutch pedal and then release it smoothly. Itis inadvisable to drive with your hand restingon the gear lever, as this can increase thewear on the gearbox. Before reverse gear (R) can be engaged, you must lift the ring underneath the gearknob.NOTICEWhen reverse gear is to be engaged, the car must be at a standstill with theaccelerator fully released.Gear lever, manual gearbox460_OM_MY09.book Page 137 Wednesday, April 2, 2008 10:32 AM
