126 Starting and drivingSteering wheel lockThe steering wheel lock is electronic and isengaged when the remote control is with-drawn from the ignition switch. When theremote control is inserted into the ignitionswitch, the steering wheel lock is disen-gaged. A click will be heard when thesteering wheel lock engages or disengages.If the car is parked with one front wheeltouching the kerb, for example, you mayneed to turn the steering wheel slightlywhen you insert the remote control to allowthe steering wheel lock to unlock. If you donot succeed on first attempt you mustremove the remote control before tryingagain. Turn the steering wheel and insertthe remote control into the ignition switch.If the steering wheel lock does not disen-gage it will not be possible to turn the remotecontrol in the ignition switch.the following message then appears onthe DIC:If there is a fault that may affect the functionof the steering wheel lock, the followingmessage will be displayed on the DIC:If the steering wheel lock malfunctions whilethe remote control is in the ignition switch,the lock may not engage when the remotecontrol is removed or it may prevent the carfrom being restarted once the engine hasbeen switched off.If you have to leave the car, lock the car bypressing down the lock buttons on thedoors. Lock the front left door from outsidewith the traditional key, see page 49. Thecar is now locked. If the car has a car alarm,this will remain inactive.Starting the engineAir may enter the lubrication system in con-junction with an oil or oil filter change. Thismay also happen if the car is laid up forsome time.This air can cause the hydraulic tappets toemit a ticking noise, which can persist for upto 15 minutes after starting. This is quitenormal and does not indicate a malfunction.It is however advisable not to exceed3000 rpm before the noise has disappeared.Pull out key, turnsteering wheel. Restart.Steering lock malfunc.Make a safe stop.WARNING• When starting the engine:– Sit down in the driver’s seat.– Depress the clutch pedal fully. If thegear lever is not in the neutral position,the clutch pedal must be fullydepressed or the car will jump for-wards or backwards, which maycause an accident.– Never start the car from outside thevehicle, e.g. through a wound-downwindow. This could lead to seriouspersonal injury.• Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colour-less, odourless, noxious gas.
