OperationApplicable RR DIFF or FR DIFF ENGAGE indicator mustbe illuminated in instrument panel gauge cluster to validateDIFF LOCK is FULLY engaged and axle shaft can beremoved. Failure to fully engage axle DIFF LOCK willallow DIFF LOCK shift collar to fall slightly and block, ortemporarily resist, axle shaft reinsertion.2. Remove cap screws and washers or stud nuts andwashers from flanges of both axle shafts.3. Loosen tapered dowels in flanges of both axle shaftsby holding a 1-1/2 inch diameter brass drift or hammeragainst axle shaft center and hitting it with a 5- to6-pound hammer.4. Remove tapered dowels and both axle shafts from axleassembly.5. Assemble a cover over openings of both wheel ends toprevent loss of lubricant and keep dirt from the wheelbearing cavities.Installing Axle Shafts1. Remove covers from wheel ends.2. Shift differential lock to the locked (engaged) position.Applicable RR DIFF or FR DIFF ENGAGE indicator mustbe illuminated in the instrument panel gauge cluster tovalidate DIFF LOCK is FULLY engaged and axle shaft canbe removed. Failure to fully engage axle DIFF LOCK willallow DIFF LOCK shift collar to fall slightly and block, ortemporarily resist, axle shaft reinsertion.3. Install right-side and left-side axle shafts as follows:a. Place gaskets on wheel hub studs.b. Push right-side axle shaft into wheel end andhousing until shaft stops against differential shiftcollar.c. Push axle shaft further into housing until shaft stopsagainst differential side gear.d. Push down on axle shaft flange and rotate shaft untilsplines of shaft and side gear are engaged.e. Push axle shaft completely into housing until axleshaft flange and gasket are flush against wheel hub.f. Install left-side axle shaft and gasket into wheel end.4. If tapered dowels are required, install them at each studand into flange of axle shaft. Use a punch or drift andhammer if needed.5. Install fasteners and tighten to correct torque value.Refer to the appropriate Service Manual section.Towing Vehicle With Rear Wheels SuspendedCAUTIONTo prevent damage to cab roof or air deflectorwhen towing the vehicle backwards (rear wheelssuspended), the air deflector must be removed.Wheneverpossible, itispreferabletotowadisabledvehiclefromthe rear by raising the rear of the chassis by the rear axles. When towing a vehicle with rear of the chassis suspended, thefront wheels must be locked in the straight ahead position.196
