OperationStarting ProceduresGeneral InformationWARNINGTo prevent property damage, personal injury, and/ or death, never start the engine unless you'resure the transmission selector is in Neutraland the brake is applied; otherwise, accidentalmovement of the vehicle can occur.CAUTIONTo prevent starter damage, DO NOT crank theengine for more than 30 seconds at a time; wait 2minutes after each try to allow the starter to cool.NOTE: Before starting the engine:• Read and understand the Controls / Features section ofthis manual.• Perform the left and right engine compartmentinspections outlined in the Inspection Guide section ofthis manual.• If your vehicle has an optional battery disconnectswitch, be sure that it is in the On position. This switchis cab mounted, or mounted on the battery box.NOTE: Automated manual transmissions must be in Neutraland vehicles with a clutch pedal require the clutch pedal tobe depressed before the starter will engage.NOTE: Some automated transmissions will delay enginecranking until the transmission power-up is complete.Engine StartingNOTE: For additional information, see Engine Operationand Maintenance Manual.The ignition switch has four key positions as follows:1. ACC (Accessory)2. OFF3. ON4. START1. Apply the parking brake and place the transmission inthe Neutral position. If equipped with a clutch pedal, theclutch pedal must be depressed.2. Turn OFF the headlights and all accessories.3. Turn the key clockwise to the ON position.139
