SeeAntilock Brake System (ABS) 0 199.Brake Pad Life SystemWhen to Change Brake PadsIf equipped, this system estimates theremaining life of the front and rearbrake pads. Brake pad life is displayedin the Driver Information Center(DIC), along with a percentage foreach axle. The system must be resetevery time the brake pads arechanged.When the system has determined thatthe brake pads need to be replaced, amessage will display, which mayinclude mileage remaining.Brake pads should always be replacedas complete axle sets.How to Reset the Brake Pad LifeSystemThe system will automatically detectwhen significantly worn brake padsare replaced. When the ignition isturned on after new pads and wearsensors are installed, a message willdisplay. Follow the prompts to resetthe system.The brake pad life system can also bemanually reset:1. Display Brake Pad Life on theDIC. See Driver Information Center(DIC) 0 132.2. Press and hold SEL. Select frontor rear pads as appropriate.3. Select YES on the confirmationmessage. Repeat for pads on theother axle if they were alsoreplaced.How to Disable the Brake PadLife SystemThe brake pad life system can beturned off. This may be necessary ifaftermarket brake pads without wearsensors are installed. When thesystem is turned off, the front andrear brake pad life percentages willnot display. However, the built-in wearindicators that make a high-pitchedwarning sound when the brake padsare worn can still determine when thepads should be replaced. See Brakes0 290.To turn off the brake pad life system:1. Display Brake Pad Life on theDIC. See Driver Information Center(DIC) 0 132.2. Select DISABLE.To turn the brake pad life system backon, follow the above steps but selectENABLE in Step 2.Brake FluidThe brake master cylinder reservoir isfilled with GM approved DOT 3 brakefluid as indicated on the reservoir cap.See Engine Compartment Overview0 274 for the location of the reservoir.
