Ignition PositionsWith the key in the ignition switch, you can turn the keyto four different positions.If you cannot start your vehicle and you are unable toremove your key from the ignition, see “Shift LockRelease” later in this section for more information.Notice: If your key seems stuck in OFF and youcan’t turn it, be sure you are using the correct key; ifso, is it all the way in? If it is, then turn the steeringwheel left and right while you turn the key hard. Turnthe key only with your hand. Using a tool to force itcould break the key or the ignition switch. If none ofthese works, then your vehicle needs service.A (OFF): This is the only position in which you caninsert or remove the key. This position locks the ignition,steering wheel and transaxle. It’s a theft-deterrentfeature.B (ACCESSORY): This position allows you to use thingslike the radio and the windshield wipers when the engineis off. This position will allow you to turn off the engine,but still turn the steering wheel. If your vehicle has acolumn shifter, you will still be able to move the shiftlever. Use ACCESSORY if you must have your vehicle inmotion while the engine is off, for example, if your vehicleis being pushed or towed.C (ON): This position is for driving. If your vehicle has aconsole shifter and you turn off the engine, thetransaxle will lock. If you need to shift the transaxle outof PARK (P), the ignition key has to be in ON.D (START): This position starts the engine.2-26
