When to Change Engine Oil(GM Oil Life System)Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you knowwhen to change the engine oil and filter. This is based onengine revolutions and engine temperature, and not onmileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage atwhich an oil change will be indicated can varyconsiderably. For the oil life system to work properly,you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.When the system has calculated that oil life has beendiminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary.A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message in the DriverInformation Center (DIC) will come on. Change your oilas soon as possible within the next two times you stop forfuel. It is possible that, if you are driving under the bestconditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oilchange is necessary for over a year. However, yourengine oil and filter must be changed at least once a yearand at this time the system must be reset. Your dealerhas GM-trained people who will perform this work usinggenuine GM parts and reset the system. It is alsoimportant to check your oil regularly and keep it at theproper level.If the system is ever reset accidentally, you mustchange your oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since yourlast oil change. Remember to reset the oil life systemwhenever the oil is changed.How to Reset the CHANGE ENGINE OILMessageThe GM Oil Life System calculates when to change yourengine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Anytime youroil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate whenthe next oil change is required. If a situation occurs whereyou change your oil prior to a CHANGE ENGINE OILmessage in the Driver Information Center (DIC) beingturned on, reset the system.After the oil has been changed, the CHANGE ENGINEOIL message must be reset. To reset the message,do the following:1. Turn the key to the ON position without startingthe engine.2. Press the INFO button on the Driver InformationCenter (DIC) until ENGINE OIL LIFE is displayed.3. Press and hold the INFO RESET button until 100%ENGINE OIL LIFE is displayed. This resets the oillife indicator.4. Turn the key to OFF.If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message comes back onwhen you start your vehicle, the engine oil life systemhas not reset. Repeat the procedure.The percentage of oil life remaining may be checked atany time by pressing the INFO button until ENGINE OILLIFE is displayed on the DIC.
