If you get the overheat warning with no sign ofsteam, try this for a minute or so:1. In heavy traffic, let the engine idle inNEUTRAL (N) while stopped. If it is safe to doso, pull off the road, shift to PARK (P) orNEUTRAL (N) and let the engine idle.2. Set the climate controls to the highest heatsetting and fan speed and open the windows,as necessary. If the coolant warning light is not on or the coolanttemperature gage does not indicate the engineis overheating, you can drive. Just to be safe, driveslower for about 10 minutes. If the warnings donot come back on, drive normally. If the warnings continue and you have not stopped, pull over, stop, and park the vehicle right away.If there is still no sign of steam, idle the engine forthree minutes while parked. If the warnings arestill indicated, turn off the engine and get everyoneout of the vehicle until it cools down. Also, see“Overheated Engine Protection Operating Mode”later in this section. You might decide not to lift the hood but to getservice help right away.Overheated Engine ProtectionOperating ModeThis operating mode allows your vehicle to bedriven to a safe place in an emergency. Should anoverheated engine condition exist, an overheatprotection mode which alternates firing groups ofcylinders helps prevent engine damage. In thismode, you will notice a loss in power and engineperformance. An engine overheat warning willindicate that an overheat condition exists. Drivingextended miles (km) and/or towing a trailer inthe overheat protection mode should be avoided.Notice: After driving in the overheatedengine protection operating mode, to avoidengine damage, allow the engine to cool beforeattempting any repair. The engine oil will beseverely degraded. Repair the cause of coolantloss and change the oil. See Engine Oil onpage 380.395
