Reading LampsThe reading lamps are located on the overheadconsole. These lamps come on automatically whenany door is opened. For manual operation, press the button next toeach lamp to turn it on or off.If the reading lamps are left on, they automaticallyshut off 10 minutes after the ignition has beenturned off.Battery Load ManagementThe battery load management feature is designedto monitor the vehicle’s electrical load anddetermine when the battery is in a heavy dischargecondition. During times of high electrical loading, the engine may idle at a higherrevolutions per minute (rpm) setting than normal tomake sure the battery charges. High electricalloads may occur when several of the following areon: headlamps, high beams, fog lamps, rearwindow defogger, the climate control fan at highspeeds, heated seats and engine cooling fans.If the battery continues to discharge, even with theengine idling at a higher rpm setting, someelectrical loads will automatically be reduced. When this occurs, the rear window defogger maytake slightly longer to clear the glass and thefan may cut back to a lower speed. For morebattery saving information, see “Battery SaverActive Message” under DIC Warnings andMessages on page 264.Electric Power ManagementThe vehicle has Electric Power Management (EPM)that estimates the battery’s temperature and stateof charge. It then adjusts the voltage for bestperformance and extended life of the battery. When the battery’s state of charge is low, thevoltage is raised slightly to quickly put the chargeback in. When the state of charge is high, thevoltage is lowered slightly to prevent overcharging. If the vehicle has a voltmeter gage or voltagedisplay on the Driver Information Center (DIC), youmay see the voltage move up or down. This isnormal. If there is a problem, an alert will bedisplayed.221
