26 ENInformation on DVD RecordingType of DiscsThis unit can record on DVD-RW/-R discs andDVD+RW/+R discs.DVD-R/+R discs allow you to record programmesonly once, and the recorded contents can be erasedalthough the space left on the disc does not change.DVD-RW/+RW discs allow you to record programmesrepeatedly, and the recorded contents can be erased.There are 3 recording formats: VR mode, Video modeand +VR mode. VR and Video modes are availablefor DVD-RW discs while as only Video mode isavailable for DVD-R discs. +VR mode is available forDVD+RW/+R discs.Video mode is the same recording format as used onthe pre-recorded DVD-Videos you purchase in localshops. You can play back the discs recorded in thisformat on most of the DVD players. You will need tofinalise such discs (see page 41) before playing themback on other DVD players. Unless finalised, you canrecord additional materials or edit discs recorded inVideo mode with this unit.VR (Video Recording) mode is a basic recordingformat for DVD-RW discs.VR mode offers advanced editing, and you can recordand edit material repeatedly, however it is playableonly on VR mode compatible unit. Finalisation isrecommended before playing them back on otherunit.+VR mode is a recording format for DVD+RW/+Rdisc. +VR mode offers basic editing, and it is playableon most DVD players. Finalisation is recommendedbefore playing them back on other unit.Recording ModeYou can select a recording mode from 5 options.The recording time will vary depending on therecording mode you select as follows.• This table is intended for a standard new single-sided 12 cm / 8 cm disc. The recording times areestimates and actual recording time may differ.• The audio and video quality becomes poorer as therecording time gets longer.Restrictions on RecordingYou cannot record copy-protected video using thisunit. Copy-protected video includes DVD-Videos andsome satellite broadcasts.If copy-protected material is detected, recording willpause or stop automatically and an error messageappears on the screen.You can only record “Copy-once only” video using aDVD-RW disc in VR mode with Content Protection forRecordable Media (CPRM).When recording a TV broadcast or an external input,you can display copy control information on thescreen.CPRM is a scrambling copy protection system for theprotection of “copy-once” broadcast programmes.This unit is CPRM compatible, which means that youcan record copy-once broadcast programmes, butyou cannot then make a copy of those recordings.CPRM recordings can only be played back on DVDplayers that are specifically compatible with CPRM.Information on Copy ControlSome satellite broadcasts include copy-protectedinformation. If you wish to record them, refer to thefollowing.Note• This unit cannot record on CD-RW or CD-R discs.• DVD-RW/-R, DVD+RW/+R and CD-RW/-R discsrecorded on a personal computer or a DVD or CDrecorder may not be played back if the disc isdamaged or dirty or if there is condensation on theplayer’s lens.• If you record a disc using a personal computer, evenif it is recorded in a compatible format, it may not beplayed back because of the settings of theapplication software used to create the disc.
