6-8 Communicating with Your NEC VersaIR PortThe IR port on the right side of your system lets your NEC Versa SXi computercommunicate with other devices that also use infrared technology. The IR port isInfrared Data Association (IrDA) compatible. You can easily transfer files betweenyour NEC Versa and an IR-equipped desktop, or print to an IR-equipped printerwithout using cables.IR transfer speed ranges from 2.4 Kbit/sec to 4.0 Mbit/sec. You can choose the IRtransfer speed through the Infrared icon in the Windows control panel. Double click theicon and select the options to access the speed parameter.Your NEC Versa transfers data at the speed compatible with the receiving device.Your NEC Versa ships with the IR port disabled. Before usingthe IR port for the first time, you must enable the device. See detailed instructions in thesections that follow.Infrared CommunicationsFollow these guidelines when using the IR port to communicate with another infrareddevice.! Position the NEC Versa SXi no more than three feet away from the IR peripheraldevice you are using.! Make sure that there is no greater than a 30º angle between the computer and thedevice.Using the IR PortFor optimal performance when using the IR (infrared) port for file transfer, printing,and other infrared communication, the Windows 98/2000 operating system is equippedwith infrared drivers for infrared communication on your NEC Versa.Enabling the IR Port in Windows 98Follow these steps to enable the IR port in Windows 98.1. Right click the infrared icon and choose Enable Infrared Communication, highlightOpen to open the Infrared Monitor window, or go to Start, Settings, Control Panel,and double click the infrared icon.2. Select the Options tab and place a check in the box labeled “Enable infraredcommunication.”
