You should therefore inspectyour carbon frame and components thoroughly on aregular basis.› Look for splitting, deep scratches, holes or otherchanges in the carbon surface.› Check whether the components feel softer orhave more give in them than usual.› Check whether individual layers (paint, finish orfibres) are flaking off.If you suspect a component is no longer sound, youshould definitely replace it before riding your bikeagain. You should ideally hand over your bike to aspecialist dealer for inspection.Inspect the following components and areas regularly (atleast every 100 km) for cracks, fractures or changes insurface appearance. Furthermore, if you come off the bikeor if it falls over, these components must always subse-quently be inspected:26.4 Carbon frameFront derailleur clamp area, derailleur hanger, saddleclamp, headset spacers, bottom bracket spacers, brakeboss or disc brake mount, dropout slots, suspensionmounts on main frame and rear triangle, bearing mountswith full-suspension frame, transition areas aroundthreaded bushes for drinking bottlesMounting of a child seat to a carbon frame is not per-mitted. There is a danger of the frame breaking withserious consequences.26.5 Carbon handlebarTransition area at handlebar stem, handles, clamping ar-eas of other componentsIf your bike falls on its handlebar, the best thing youcan do is replace it. Always have bar ends retrofittedby your specialist cycle shop.26.6 Carbon handlebar stemClamping area of all screws, head tube inside and outsideIf you have changed the handlebar position, bear inmind that the stem must extensively enclose the headtube.
