53Operating the DCR600II ReceiverSelecting a Surround ModeOne of the most important features of theDCR600II is its ability to reproduce a full multi-channel, surround sound field from digitalsources, analog matrix surround-encodedprograms and standard stereo programs. In all,a total of thirteen listening modes are availableon the DCR600II.Selection of a surround mode is based on personaltaste, as well as the type of program sourcematerial being used. For example, motion picturesor TV programs bearing the logo of one of themajor surround-encoding processes, such asDolby Surround, DTS Stereo or UltraStereo maybe played in either the Dolby Digital, DolbyPro Logic II Movies or Logic 7 Cinema surroundmodes, depending on the source material.NOTE: Once a program has been encoded withmatrix surround information, it retains thesurround information as long as the program isbroadcast in stereo. Thus, movies with surroundsound may be decoded via any of the analogsurround modes such as Pro Logic II or Logic 7,when they are broadcast via conventional TVstations, cable, pay-TV and satellite transmission. In addition, a growing number of made-for-televisionprograms, sports broadcasts, radio dramas andmusic CDs are also recorded in surround sound. You may view a list of these programs at theDolby Laboratories Web site at www.dolby.com.Even when a program is not listed as carryingintentional surround information, you may findthat the Pro Logic II, Logic 7, Hall 1, Hall 2 orTheater modes often deliver enveloping surroundpresentations through the use of the naturalinformation present in all stereo recordings. However, for stereo – but not surround – pro-grams, we suggest that you experiment with theother modes.Surround modes are selected using either thefront panel controls or the remote. To select asurround mode from the front panel, press theSurround Mode Selector 7 to scroll up ordown through the list of available modes. Toselect a surround mode using the remote, pressthe Surround Mode Selectort and thenpress the ⁄ /¤ Button y to changethe mode. As you press the buttons, theSurround mode name will appear in the MainInformation Display U, and an individualmode indicator will also light up CDFHIJKL.Note that the Dolby Digital and DTS modes mayonly be selected when a digital input is in use.In addition, when a digital source is present, theDCR600II will automatically select and switch tothe correct mode (Dolby Digital or DTS), regardlessof the mode that has been previously selected. For more information on selecting digital sources, see the following section of this manual. To listen to a program in traditional two-channelstereo, using the front left and front rightspeakers only (plus the subwoofer if installedand configured), follow the instructions shownabove for using the remote until SURR OFFappears in the Main Information Display U.Note that the DCR600II does not include a bal-ance control. Also, as described elsewhere inthis manual, the bass and treble adjustments areaccessed by pressing the Tone Mode Button 6followed by the Set Button ^.Using Digital SourcesDigital audio is a major advance over older systemssuch as the original version of Dolby Pro Logic. Itdelivers five discrete channels: front left, center, front right, surround left and surround right. Eachchannel reproduces full frequency range (20Hz to20kHz) and offers dramatically improved dynamicrange and significant improvements to signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, digital systems have thecapability to deliver an additional channel that isspecifically devoted to low-frequency information. This is the “.1” channel referred to when you seethese systems described as “5.1”. The bass chan-nel is separate from the other channels, butsince it is intentionally bandwidth-limited, sounddesigners have given it that unique designation.Dolby DigitalDolby Digital (originally AC-3®) is a standard partof DVD, and is available on satellite broadcastsand is a part of the new high-definition television(HDTV) system. Some digital cable television sys-tems also provide a Dolby Digital signal. However, due to cable’s inherent bandwidth limitations, thismay be only a 2.0-channel version rather than full5.1-channel Dolby Digital. Check with your cableprovider.Note that an optional, external RF demodulatoris required to use the DCR600II to listen to theDolby Digital soundtracks available on laserdiscs. Connect the RF output of the LD player tothe demodulator and then connect the digitaloutput of the demodulator to the Optical orCoaxial Inputs ™£ of the DCR600II. Nodemodulator is required for use with DVDplayers or DTS-encoded laser discs.DTSDTS is another digital audio system that iscapable of delivering 5.1 audio. Although bothDTS and Dolby Digital are digital, they use dif-ferent methods of encoding the signals, andthus they require different decoding circuits toconvert the digital signals back to analog.DTS-encoded soundtracks are available onselect DVD discs, as well as on special audio-only DTS discs. You may use any CD playerequipped with a digital output to play DTS-encoded discs with the DCR600II. All that isrequired is to connect the player’s output toeither the Optical or Coaxial Input ™£ onthe rear panel. In order to listen to DVDs encoded with DTSsoundtracks, the DVD player must be compatiblewith the DTS signal as indicated by a DTS logoon the player’s front panel. This does not indicatea problem with the DCR600II, as some playerscannot pass the DTS signal through to the digitaloutputs. Note that, although early DVD playersmay not be able to play DTS-encoded DVDs, theDVD600II is compatible. If you are in doubt as tothe capability of your DVD player to handle DTSdiscs, consult the player’s owner’s manual.Selecting a Digital SourceTo utilize either digital mode, you must haveproperly connected a digital source to theDCR600II. Connect the digital outputs from DVDplayers, HDTV receivers, satellite systems or CDplayers to the Optical or Coaxial Inputs ™£.The DCR600II automatically assigns theCoaxial 1 Input ™ to the DVD video input.Make sure to connect the Coaxial DigitalOutput on the back of the DVD600II tothis input.Since the DCR600II does not have an analogaudio input available for the DVD source, if, inthe future, you decide to use a different DVDplayer, one requiring an analog audio connec-tion, you may wish to connect that player to theVID1, VID2 or VID3 input instead. When playing a digital source, first select theinput using the remote or front panel controls asoutlined in this manual. Next, select the digitalsource by pressing the Digital Input SelectorButton * and then using the ⁄/¤ Buttonsy on the remote or the SelectorButtons 5 on the front panel to choose any ofthe OPTICAL or COAXIAL inputs, asthey appear in the Main Information DisplayU, or Source Indicators BE. This proce-dure may also be used to select an inputsource’s analog audio input, if available. TheDCR600II does not offer an analog audio inputfor DVD. Note that the DVD input of theDCR600II is configured at the factory to defaultto the COAX 1 digital input.(continued) |
