11Connect all components as per the Quick SetupGuide, or as per the appropriate diagram onpages 6 through 8 of this manual.Remove any protective plastic films from thefront panel displays of the DCR600II andDVD600II.1. Plug the receiver’s Power Cord b into anunswitched AC outlet.2. Press the receiver’s Main Power Switch 1in so that it latches in and is flush with thefront panel. Note that the Power Indicator3 will turn amber, indicating that the unit isin the Standby mode.3. Install the three supplied AAA batteries in theremote as shown. Be certain to follow the (+)and (–) polarity indicators that are on the bot-tom of the battery compartment.4. Turn the DCR600II on, either by pressing theSystem Power Control 2 on the frontpanel, or by pressing an Input Selectordijklmno on theremote. The Power Indicator 3 will turngreen to confirm that the unit is on, and theMain Information Display ( will alsolight up.Setting the output levels correctly is the key topreserving the enveloping surround sensationthat the artists of your favorite movies intendedfor you to experience.1. Put the DCR600II in Dolby Pro Logic II modeby pressing the Surround Mode Selectort 7 repeatedly until DOLBY PROLOGIC II– MOVIES appears in theMain Information Display U, and thePro Logic II Indicator F lights.2. Press the Test Button q to start a testtone circulating from speaker to speaker,starting with the front left speaker (indicatedby FL in the display), and going aroundclockwise. Let it circulate once to check thatyour speakers have been connected correctly.3. The goal is to obtain the same output levelfrom each speaker. Use the front left speakeras your reference, adjusting the VolumeControl %sw until the sound comingfrom the front left speaker is at a comfortablelevel.4. If any other speaker sounds too loud or softin comparison to the front left speaker, adjustits output level by pressing the ⁄ /¤ Buttonsy on the remote, or the SelectorButtons 5 on the receiver’s front panel.This will cause the test tone to pause at thatspeaker to allow you to make the adjustment.(DO NOT adjust the volume for any speakersother than the reference front left speaker.)When you are satisfied with the level of thatspeaker, simply wait, and the tone will con-tinue to circulate after about 15 seconds.5. If you are using a sound pressure level (SPL)meter for precise level adjustment, start bysetting the volume so that the meter reads75dB, C-Weighting, Slow.6. When you are finished adjusting the levelsfor all speakers (except the subwoofer, whichis not adjustable using this procedure – seepage 39 for that procedure), press the TestButton q to end the test tone.NOTE: The Bass and Treble levels may be adjustedby pressing the Tone Mode Button 6 untilTONE IN appears in the display, followed bythe Set Button ^. Use the Selector Buttons5 to adjust Bass or Treble levels by plus orminus 10dB, then press the Set Button ^again to enter the settings. When setting thespeaker output levels as described above, makesure either to set the Bass and Treble levels to0dB, or to press the Tone Mode Button 6until the words TONE OUT appear.For most installations, your DCR600II receivershould now be ready for use. If you would likefurther information on making other, advancedsettings, please see the section titled“Configuring the DCR600II Receiver”.Making the Video ConnectionsIMPORTANT NOTE: The DCR600II andDVD600II offer both S-Video and composite videoinputs and outputs. However, you must chooseone type of connection or the other for all connec-tions in your system. This will depend on the typeof connections on your television. If both types ofconnections are available, we recommend thatyou purchase S-Video cables and make thoseconnections for superior picture quality. Thecomposite video connections will also provideexcellent results. However, the DCR600II will notconvert from one type of signal to the other.1. Connect one end of the single-lead RCA cablewith yellow connectors to the CompositeVideo Output on the DVD600II and the otherend to the DVD Composite Video Input ⁄ onthe receiver.ORConnect one end of an S-Video cable (not sup-plied) to the S-Video Output on theDVD600II and the other end to the DVD S-VideoInput ⁄ on the receiver.2. Connect one of the yellow ends of the triple-lead RCA cable with red, white and yellow con-nectors to the Video Monitor CompositeVideo Output ° on the receiver, and the otherend to the composite video input jack on your tel-evision. This jack is often color-coded yellow;however, if you have any questions about whichjack to use, consult your television’s owner’smanual or your dealer for assistance.ORConnect one end of a second S-Video cable(not supplied) to the Video Monitor S-VideoOutput ° on the receiver, and the other endto the S-Video input jack on your television.3. If your television is equipped with componentvideo (Y/Pr/Pb) inputs, in addition to the aboveconnections, you may use a triple-lead compo-nent video cable (not supplied) to connect theComponent Video Outputs on theDVD600II to the inputs on your television.4. Connect one end of the black 1/8" mini phonecord to the Remote IR Output ‚ on theDCR600II, and the other end to the RemoteControl Input on the DVD600II.If you will not be connecting additional equip-ment to your system just yet, you may plug inthe receiver and DVD changer. The receiver andDVD changer each have a Main PowerSwitch 1 which must be pressed in first, anda System Power Control 2, which should bepressed second. The last source selection willappear in the receiver’s information display.The DCR600II is set at the factory to a defaultconfiguration for use with small satellite speak-ers and a subwoofer such as the JBL SCS135Psystem. If other speakers are used, then thespeaker configurations may need to be changed(see page 38).Although the DCR600 II is set to the correct speakerconfiguration settings for the speakers suppliedwith this system at the factory, you will need toadjust the output levels of the speakers to cus-tomize the system to your speaker placementand room acoustics.Completing Setup
