CHAPTER 4: Installing Components www.gateway.com44Installing and removing PCI expansion cardsCautionAlways operate your server with the PCIriser assembly in place. The PCI riserassembly is important for correct airflowwithin the server. Operating the serverwithout the PCI riser assembly in placecould result in overheating and possibledata loss or equipment damage. The system board provides one 280-pin PCI-X 100MHz/PCI-E x8 expansion slotand one PCI-E expansion slot. One PCI-X 100MHz/PCI-E x8 expansion slot cansupport one PCI-X 100MHz and two PCI-E x8 slots with x4 speed using the risercard and one PCI-E expansion slot can support two PCI-E x8 slots with x4 speedusing the riser card. The riser card comes with the system package.Removing and installing the PCI riser assembly, a riser or PCI cardCautionThe PCI riser assembly and individual PCIexpansion cards are not hot-swappable.Before installing or removing any part ofthe assembly, make sure that power isturned off and the power cord(s) isunplugged. To remove and reinstall the PCI riser assembly:1 Follow the instructions in “Preventing static electricity discharge” onpage 30. Make sure that you turn off the server, then unplug the powercord(s) and all other cables connected to the server.2 Follow the instructions in “Opening the server case” on page 31.3 If you are replacing a card, disconnect any cables that are attached to theold card.4 Push the release clips (1) in the direction shown in the illustration, thenlift the assembly (2) out of the chassis.CautionDo not touch the contacts on the bottompart of the expansion card. Touching thecontacts can cause electrostatic damageto the card.5 Place the PCI riser assembly on a stable, static-free surface, then open thecard lock (3) and remove the card (4).345
