UBI EasyCoder 501 – Service Manual6610. RIBBON SAVE DEVICE, cont'd.10.1Working Principles, cont'd.To compensate for the time wasted in lifting and lowering theprinthead, the paper is fed out with maximum speed (200 mm/sec.= 8"/sec.) as long as the printhead is lifted, regardless of selectedprint speed. Obviously, the print roller can no longer feed out thepaper due to the lack of counter pressure, but the rear drive roller, driven by the same belt as the print roller, will push the paperforward. A spring-loaded pressing roller produces counter-pressure.2 mm before printing is to be resumed, the printhead is lowered, which takes approx. 0.08 sec., and the transfer ribbon starts runningagain. Each operation of lifting and lowering the printhead takes 10+2=12mm (≈ 0.5") of paper/ribbon feed; e.g. at a non-printed area of 20mm, the actual saving of ribbon will be 8 mm, and at a non-printedarea of 50 mm, the saving will be 38 mm.To facilitate paper reloading, the pressing roll is coupled to theheadlift so the pressure is released when the printhead is lifted andthe paper can be threaded between the rear drive roller and thepressing roll.By default, the Ribbon Save Device is automatically turned onwhenever such a device is fitted. However, ribbon save operationcan be turned off/on at will by means of RIBBON SAVE OFF andRIBBON SAVE ON statements. RIBBON SAVE OFF/ON affects boththe immediate and the programming modes. There are no adjust-ments available to the operator. When the printer is fitted with a Ribbon Save Device, that is turnedoff by means of a RIBBON SAVE OFF statement, it is recommendednot to pull back the paper, e.g. by setting up negative Start Adjustvalues or issuing negative FORMFEED statements. Pulling back thepaper increases the risk of ribbon wrinkling and unsatisfactoryprintout quality. In case pull back cannot be avoided, test first! Notethat this restriction does not apply when the Ribbon Save Device isturned on.When needed, the rear rollers and the LSS guide plates can becleaned by means of a cloth or blotting paper slightly moistenedwith isopropyl alcohol. Allow parts to dry before using the printer. The Ribbon Save Device is factory adjusted and no readjustment ofthe nuts on the printhead bracket should be attempted, except by anauthorized service technician. No lubrication is required.10.2Control10.3Maintenance
