Read this section carefully to provide yourselfwith a good understanding of how your keyset operates.There are two types of iDCS500 system, called ‘L’ and ‘M’ versions. Somefeatures provided by one version may be different, or may not be available, tothe other version. This guide tells you where this is the case.YOUR KEYSETKeysets have buttons or “keys” that are used to access or activate featureson your office phone system. The keys with paper designation strips are pro-grammable keys. This means a key can be programmed for a specific func-tion on your keyset, and the same key can be something different on anotherkeyset.The iDCS 28D keyset has 28 programmable keys, the 18D keyset has 18,and the 8D and 8S keysets have eight. All but the 8S keyset have a liquidcrystal display (LCD) for displaying call information, feature menus, and soon. With an LCD, you have the option of using ‘soft keys’ to select featuresas an alternative to using programmable keys. You can also use the displayto program your keyset for certain functions.To see the layout for your keyset, refer to the appropriate layout diagram atthe end of this section. Ask the system administrator to have your most fre-quently-used features assigned to programmable keys, and make sure thatthese keys are labelled properly.Lines from the telephone company are “C.O. lines.” Calls on these lines arereferred to as “outside calls.” Your keyset can have individual C.O. linekeys—called Direct Trunk Selection (DTS) keys—or lines may be assignedto groups.
