Manual Transmission OperationIf your vehicle has a manual transmission, the shift leveris located on the center console between the frontseats. The following explains how to operate the manualtransmission.FIRST (1): Press the clutch pedal and shift intoFIRST (1). Then slowly let up on the clutch pedal asyou press the accelerator pedal.Shift into FIRST (1) when you are going less than25 mph (40 km/h). If you come to a complete stop and itis hard to shift into FIRST (1), put the shift lever inNEUTRAL and let up on the clutch. Press the clutchpedal back down. Then shift into FIRST (1).SECOND (2): Press the clutch pedal as you let up onthe accelerator pedal and shift into SECOND (2).Then, slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press theaccelerator pedal.THIRD (3), FOURTH (4), FIFTH (5) andSIXTH (6): Shift into THIRD (3), FOURTH (4), FIFTH (5)and SIXTH (6) the same way you do for SECOND (2).Slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press theaccelerator pedal.To stop, let up on the accelerator pedal and press thebrake pedal. Just before the vehicle stops, pressthe clutch pedal and the brake pedal, and shift toNEUTRAL.NEUTRAL: Use this position when you start or idleyour engine. Your shift lever is in NEUTRAL when it iscentered in the shift pattern, not in any gear.REVERSE (R): To back up, press down the clutchpedal, completely stop the vehicle, and shift intoREVERSE (R). Let up on the clutch pedal slowly whilepressing the accelerator pedal.2-41
