Installing a Module 59Installation and RemovalConsequences If you only have one Switch Fabric Management Module (SFMM) installed andyou remove it or it fails, all traffic on the interface modules will be interrupted. If your chassis is already operating in your network and you want to remove theprimary SFMM, first ensure that a secondary (standby) SFMM resides in thechassis. When you remove the primary module, the secondary module isactivated and the system is automatically reset.CAUTION: Do not install or remove modules during the system power-on processor while software is downloading to the Switch Fabric Management Module. You do not need to disconnect power before you install modules in the Switch4005 chassis. You can install modules while the chassis is operating. This actionis called a hot swap. See the section “Hot Swap” earlier in this chapter formore information. The SFMM stores configuration information for up to twelve interfacemodules. This information is associated with a module’s hardware addresseswhich are preprogrammed at the manufacturing center, i.e., every module hasunique port-based hardware addresses called MAC addresses. When youremove a module and insert a new module in that slot — even one of the sametype — you cannot transfer the old module’s configuration to this module. Youwill have to manually configure the parameters for the new module’s ports. However, if you immediately re-installed the original module in that slot or in adifferent slot, the chassis would “remember” the module and retain itsconfiguration parameters. If a module fails and you need to replace it with another one of the same type, you must configure the new module manually. At this time, you cannotdownload the previous module’s configuration to the new module.CAUTION: Be sure to follow the module removal procedure in this chapter. Thisprocedure includes pressing the Release Button on the module and waiting untilthe Release LED stops flashing before you unscrew the module, release the ejectorhandles, and remove the module.CAUTION: Do not install or remove any modules during the system power-onprocess or while software is downloading to the Switch Fabric ManagementModule. If you are performing the initial installation of a Switch 4005, 3Comrecommends that you install all modules and power supplies first, then powerup the Switch. This way, you can direct your full attention to the LEDs on themodules and power supplies. If the Switch is powered up when you installcomponents, you must finish securing them before you can concentrate on theLEDs. After you install a new module, you must access the CLI or Web interface toconfigure the module’s ports as members of VLANs, include them inaggregated links, and so forth. See the Switch 4005 Software ConfigurationGuide.
