34 CHAPTER 5: SWITCH 4005 P OWER SUPPLIES7 Before you apply power to the Switch, consult the setup procedure in Chapter 1.If you are performing the initial installation of a Switch 4005, 3Com recommendsthat you install all modules and power supplies first, then power up the Switch. This way, you can direct your full attention to the LEDs on the modules and powersupplies. If the Switch 4005 is powered up while you install components, you mustfinish securing them before you can concentrate on their LEDs.8 If you are ready to apply power to the Switch, plug one end of the power cord intothe socket on the power supply and then plug the other end into the dedicatedelectrical outlet. If both the AC and DC LEDs are lighted, then the power supply is functioningnormally. If not, consult the section “Troubleshooting a Power Supply” in thischapter. If you have one power supply installed, it will assume the full load of the chassis. Ifyou have two power supplies installed, they will share the chassis load.Removing a PowerSupplyThis section describes how to remove a 300-watt AC power supply from theSwitch 4005 chassis.WARNING: Before you attempt to remove a power supply from the chassis, besure to disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and then from theSwitch 4005 power supply to avoid hazardous energy levels. Before you begin, have ready a flathead screwdriver. To remove a power supply, follow these steps:1 Remove the power cord from the electrical outlet.2 Remove the power cord from the AC input socket on the Switch 4005 powersupply.3 Remove the Switch 4005 power supply:a Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the retainer screws that secure the powersupply to the rear of the chassis. (See Figure 12 on page 33).b Grasp the handles on the power supply with both hands.c Begin to pull the power supply straight out, ensuring that you do not damagethe connector and guide pins on the rear of the power supply or the connectorinside the chassis.d Once the power supply is partially removed, put one hand beneath the powersupply to support it as you continue to remove it from the chassis.CAUTION: To prevent damage to the guide pins and connectors, while you pullthe power supply straight out of the chassis, put one hand underneath the powersupply to support it.4 If you are not going to install a replacement power supply in the empty slot, installa blank faceplate over the empty slot to ensure proper cooling in the chassis.
