Section 7 Refrigeration SystemPart No. 80-1214-3 7-19SYSTEM CONTAMINATION CLEAN-UPGeneralThis section describes the basic requirements forrestoring contaminated systems to reliable service.Determining Severity Of ContaminationSystem contamination is generally caused by eithermoisture or residue from compressor burnout enteringthe refrigeration system.Inspection of the refrigerant usually provides the firstindication of system contamination. Obvious moisture oran acrid odor in the refrigerant indicates contamination.If either condition is found, or if contamination issuspected, use a Total Test Kit from Totaline or a similardiagnostic tool. These devices sample refrigerant,eliminating the need to take an oil sample. Follow themanufacturer’s directions.If a refrigerant test kit indicates harmful levels ofcontamination, or if a test kit is not available, inspect thecompressor oil.1. Remove the refrigerant charge from the icemachine.2. Remove the compressor from the system.3. Check the odor and appearance of the oil.4. Inspect open suction and discharge lines at thecompressor for burnout deposits.5. If no signs of contamination are present, perform anacid oil test.Check the chart below to determine the type of cleanuprequired.ImportantManitowoc Ice, Inc. assumes no responsibility forthe use of contaminated refrigerant.
