Section 7 Refrigeration SystemPart No. 80-1214-3 7-25REFRIGERANT RE-USE POLICYManitowoc recognizes and supports the need for properhandling, re-use, and disposal of, CFC and HCFCrefrigerants. Manitowoc service procedures requirerecapturing refrigerants, not venting them to theatmosphere.It is not necessary, in or out of warranty, to reduce orcompromise the quality and reliability of your customers’products to achieve this.Manitowoc approves the use of:1. New Refrigerant• Must be of original nameplate type.2. Reclaimed Refrigerant• Must be of original nameplate type.• Must meet ARI Standard 700 (latest edition)specifications.3. Recovered or Recycled Refrigerant• Must be recovered or recycled in accordancewith current local, state and federal laws.• Must be recovered from and re-used in the sameManitowoc product. Re-use of recovered orrecycled refrigerant from other products is notapproved.• Recycling equipment must be certified to ARIStandard 740 (latest edition) and be maintainedto consistently meet this standard.• Recovered refrigerant must come from a“contaminant-free” system. To decide whetherthe system is contaminant free, consider:– Type(s) of previous failure(s)– Whether the system was cleaned, evacuatedand recharged properly following failure(s)– Whether the system has been contaminatedby this failure– Compressor motor burnouts and improperpast service prevent refrigerant re-use.– Refer to “System Contamination Cleanup” totest for contamination.4. “Substitute” or “Alternative” Refrigerant• Manitowoc Flake/Chiplet ice machines useR404A refrigerant. Substitute refrigerants are notapproved for use in Flake/Chiplet ice machines.ImportantManitowoc Ice, Inc. assumes no responsibility foruse of contaminated refrigerant. Damage resultingfrom the use of contaminated, recovered, orrecycled refrigerant is the sole responsibility of theservicing company.Revised 8/2003
