100Chapter 6: Troubleshootingwww.gateway.comBattery replacementIf you have problems after installing a new CMOS battery, try each of thefollowing items, closing the case and restarting the server after each try:■ Turn off the server and make sure that all exterior cables are attached andsecured to the correct connectors.■ Make sure that all power switches are on. If the server is plugged into asurge protector or UPS, make sure that it is turned on.■ Open the BIOS Setup utility and compare the settings on the screen withyour notes, then correct any discrepancies.■ Remove the side panel by following the instructions in “Opening the servercase” on page 42, then make sure that all cables inside the case are attachedsecurely. Also, make sure that the colored cable edges are aligned correctlyand that the connectors do not miss any pins.■ If you have the proper test equipment, make sure that the new battery haspower. Although unlikely, your new battery may be defective.Beep codesWhenever a recoverable error occurs during the power-on self-test (POST), theBIOS displays an error message that describes the problem. The BIOS also soundsa beep code (one long tone followed by two short tones) during POST if thevideo configuration fails (a faulty video controller) or if an expansion card isnot functioning correctly.Warning To avoid bodily injury, do not attempt to troubleshoot yourserver problem if:■ Power cords or plugs are damaged■ Liquid has been spilled into your server■ Your server was dropped■ The case was damagedInstead, unplug your server and contact a qualifiedcomputer technician.
