3TIS Operation and SymbologyPart One: Section 1and avoid.” Some of the more common examples ofthese errors follow:• When client or intruder aircraft maneuversexcessively or abruptly, the tracking algorithmmay report incorrect horizontal position untilthe maneuvering aircraft stabilizes.• When a rapidly closing intruder is on a coursethat crosses the client aircraft course at a shal-low angle (either overtaking or head on) andeither aircraft abruptly changes course within¼ NM, TIS may display the intruder on theopposite side of the client than it actually is.These are relatively rare occurrences and willbe corrected in a few radar scans once the coursehas stabilized.Improving TISUsers of TIS can render valuable assistance inthe correction of malfunctions by reporting theirobservations of undesirable performance. Reportersshould identify the time of observation, location, typeand identity of aircraft, and describe the conditionobserved; the type of transponder processor and soft-ware in use can also be useful information. Since TISperformance is monitored by maintenance personnelother than ATC, it is suggested that malfunctions bereported in the following ways:• By telephone to the nearest Flight Service Sta-tion (FSS) facility.• By FAA Form 8000-7, Safety ImprovementReport, a postage-paid card designed for thispurpose. These cards may be obtained at FAAFSSs, General Aviation District Offices, FlightStandards District Offices, and General Avia-tion Fixed Based Operations.TIS SymbologyTIS traffic is displayed on the 400W/500W Seriesunit according to TCAS symbology, graphically dis-played on a dedicated graphical page (Traffic Page;see below), and on the moving Map Page. A TrafficAdvisory (TA) symbol appears as a solid yellow circle(or half circle on the outer range ring if the traffic isoutside the range of the dedicated Traffic Page). Prox-imity Advisories (PA) are displayed as a solid diamond, and other traffic is displayed as an open diamond. PAand other traffic is normally displayed in white, or itmay be alternatively configured for display in cyan. When configured for cyan, the traffic page range ringsand markings are displayed in white. Altitude devia-tion from own aircraft altitude is displayed above thetarget symbol if traffic is above own aircraft altitude, and below the symbol if they are below own aircraftaltitude. Altitude trend is displayed as an up arrow(> +500 ft/min), down arrow (< -500 ft/min), or nosymbol if less than 500 ft/min rate in either direction.• Traffic Advisories (TA)—Yellow• Proximity Advisories (PA)—White(may be configured as Cyan)• Other—White (may be configured as Cyan)190-00356-30 Rev H
