31Part Three: Section 1TAWS IntroductionPart Three:TAWS InterfaceSection 1: IntroductionNOTE: Either the TERRAIN, TAWS (500W-series only),HTAWS, or Terrain Proximity functionality will be avail-able via the Terrain page, depending on the installedhardware and configuration.OverviewGarmin’s Terrain Awareness Warning System(TAWS) is an optional feature (500W-series only) toincrease situational awareness and aid in reducingcontrolled flight into terrain. Garmin TAWS satisfiesTSO-C151b Class B requirements for certification.Class B TAWS is required for all Part 91 aircraftoperations with six or more passenger seats and forPart 135 turbine aircraft operations with six to ninepassenger seats (FAR Parts 91.223, 135.154).TAWS provides visual and aural annunciationswhen terrain and obstacles are within the given altitudethreshold from the aircraft.Garmin TAWS satisfies TSO-C151b Class Brequirements for certificationNOTE: TAWS-enabled units can be identified byobserving the power-up screens. TAWS-enabled unitswill display “TAWS” after the model number. TAWS-enabled units can also be identified by going to theTerrain page and checking the upper left-corner for“TAWS.”Operating CriteriaGarmin TAWS requires the following to operateproperly:• The system must have a valid 3D GPS positionsolution• The system must have a valid terrain/obstacle/airport terrain databaseLimitationsNOTE: The data contained in the terrain and obstacledatabases comes from government agencies. Garminaccurately processes and cross-validates the data, butcannot guarantee the accuracy and completeness of thedata.TAWS displays terrain and obstructions relative tothe altitude of the aircraft. Individual obstructions maybe shown if available in the database. However, allobstructions may not be available in the database anddata may be inaccurate. Never use this information fornavigation.Terrain information is based on terrain elevationdata contained in a database that may containinaccuracies. Terrain information should be usedas an aid to situational awareness. Never use it fornavigation or to maneuver to avoid terrain.TAWS uses terrain and obstacle information sup-plied by government sources. The data undergoes veri-fication by Garmin to confirm accuracy of the content, per TSO-C151b. However, the displayed informationshould never be understood as being all-inclusive.190-00356-30 Rev H
