9TIS Operational ProceduresPart One: Section 3Section 3: TIS Operational ProceduresIntroductionTIS warns the user with voice and visual trafficadvisories whenever it predicts an intruder to be athreat (see illustration). Voice and visual data are sentfrom the GTX 330. The user should not start evasivemaneuvers using information from the 400W/500Wdisplay or on a traffic advisory only. The display andadvisories are intended only for assistance in visuallylocating the traffic, due to the lack in resolution andcoordination ability. The flight crew should attemptto visually acquire the intruder aircraft and maintaina safe separation in accordance with the regulatoryrequirements and good operating practice. If the flightcrew cannot visually acquire the aircraft, they shouldcontact ATC to obtain any information that may assistconcerning the intruder aircraft. Based on the aboveprocedures, minor adjustment to the vertical flightpath consistent with air traffic requirements are notconsidered evasive maneuvers.Power-Up TestThe TIS interface performs an automatic testduring power-up.• If the system passes the power-up test, theStandby Screen appears on the Traffic Page.• If the system passes the power-up test and theaircraft is airborne (as determined by systemconfiguration at the time of installation, seeyour installer for detailed criteria information),traffic is displayable on the Traffic Page in oper-ating mode.• If the system fails the power-up test, the “NODATA”, “DATA FAIL”, or “FAILED” messageis displayed. See your installer for correctiveaction if the “DATA FAIL”, or “FAILED” messageis displayed. The “FAILED” message indicatesthe GTX 330 has failed. The “DATA FAIL” mes-sage indicates data are being received from theGTX 330 but a failure was detected in the datastream. The “NO DATA” message indicates thatdata are not being received from the GTX 330.NOTE: “NO DATA” may be a normal mode of opera-tion in a dual transponder installation where the GTX330 with TIS is not the selected transponder.• UNAVAIL — When a 60 second periodelapses with no data, TIS is considered to beunavailable. This state is indicated by the text“UNAVAILABLE” (500W Series) and “UNAVAIL”(400W Series). The pilot should be awarethat “UNAVAIL” could indicate a TIS coveragelimitation due to a line-of-sight situation, a lowaltitude condition, no TIS service, or a resultof flying directly over the radar site providingcoverage (cone of silence).Conditions for Traffic AdvisoriesThe following condition causes TIS to display a TrafficAdvisory (TA) on the 400W/500W Series unit:• The intruder aircraft approaches your aircraft ona course that will intercept (defined by a 0.5 NMhorizontal radius and a relative altitude of ± 500feet) your course within 34 seconds.0.5 nmIntruder Aircraft+ 500 ftThis area within 34 seconds - 500 ft190-00356-30 Rev H
