58 CHAPTER 3: INSTALLING M ANAGEMENT M ODULESInstalling Modules One Management Module (EME) is required in each chassis. A second isoptional for redundancy. The slots for management modules areobviously in the upper portion of the chassis due to their smaller size.3Com recommends that you install all Management Modules prior toadding switching modules. This section may not apply to you if you ordered a starter kit that has theManagement Module pre-installed at the factory and if you do not intendto install other management modules. However, read this section if youare assembling separately ordered chassis components or if want toinstall a second Management Module. For a detailed module installation procedure, see the EnterpriseManagement Engine Quick Start Guide for the CoreBuilder 9000Enterprise Switch. This document is available from the Switch 4007Online Manuals CD or from the 3Com Web site. For information on installing and operating two EMEs, see “Creating aRedundant Configuration” next in this chapter.Hot Insert andHot SwapYou do not need to turn off power to install modules in the Switch 4007chassis. You can install modules while the chassis is operating. This actionis called a hot insert. You can also remove a module and install a replacement in that slot whilethe chassis is operating. This action is called a hot swap.If your chassis is already operating in your network and you want toremove the primary (active) Management Module and retainuninterrupted chassis services, first ensure that a secondary (standby)Management Module resides in the chassis. When you remove theprimary module, the secondary module activates quickly and seamlessly.CAUTION: Do not install or remove modules during the system power-onprocess or while software is downloading to any modules in the chassis.InstallingNon-ManagementModulesFor a detailed installation procedure and other module-specificinformation, see the Quick Start Guide that accompanies the module.Guides for all modules that are supported in the Switch 4007 areavailable from the Switch 4007 Online Manuals CD or from the 3ComWeb site.
