25In briefDiesel particle filter 3The d iesel pa rticle filter system removespolluting soot particles out of the engineexhaust ga ses. The system includes aself-cleaning function that op eratesautomatically whilst driving. The filter iscleaned by burning the trapped sootparticles at a high temperature. There ma ybe an increase in fuel consumption,exhaust smell, and engine cooling fanopera tion 3 during the self-clea ningopera tion.The self-cleaning function cannot operateautomatically during c ertain drivingsituations where the engine does not reachits norma l operating tempera ture.An ex ample of this would b e driv ing onlyshort distances in cold weather.If the filter needs cleaning and rec entdriving situa tions did not allow the functionto autom atically operate, then controlindica tor ! will flash. If this occurs, thenyou may continue to drive the vehiclenormally . The vehicle will not be damagedand does not req uire service.The self-cleaning function willautom atic ally operate whilst driving afterthe engine has reached its norma lop erating temperature. Controlindica tor ! will continue to flash until theself-c leaning operation is complete.
