Ifthe operator(s) or mechanic(s) cannot read English, it isthe owner's responsibility to explain this material to them.• Become familiar with the safe operation of the equipment,operator controls, and safety signs.• All operators and mechanics should be trained. Theowner is responsible for training the users.• Never let children or untrained people operate or servicethe equipment. Local regulations may restrict the age ofthe operator.• Ensure that you understand the hand signals used on thejob site. Follow the instructions of the signal person.Preparation• Before using the machine, have the area marked forunderground utilities, and do not dig in marked areas.Also, be aware of the location of objects and structuresthat may not be marked, such as underground storagetanks, wells, and septic systems.• Evaluate the terrain to determine what accessories andattachments are needed to properly and safely performthe job. Use only accessories and attachments approvedby the manufacturer.• Mark the job site clearly and keep bystanders away.• Review the job site hazards, safety and emergencyprocedures, and personnel responsibilities with allworkers before beginning the work.• Wear appropriate clothing, including hard hat, safetyglasses, long pants, safety shoes, and hearing protection;some jobs may also require that you wear a reflective vestand/or a respirator. Secure long hair, loose clothing, andjewelry to prevent them from getting tangled in movingparts.• Before operating the machine with an attachment, ensurethat the attachment is properly installed.• Use extra care when handling fuels. They are flammableand vapors are explosive.– Use only an approved container.– Do not remove the fuel cap or add fuel with theengine running. Allow the engine to cool beforefueling. Do not smoke near the machine while theengine is running.– Do not refuel or drain the machine indoors.• Check that the operator's presence controls, safetyswitches, and shields are attached and functioningproperly. Do not operate the machine unless thesecontrols, switches, and shields are functioning properly.General Operation• Always wear a seat belt when operating a machine witha ROPS.• Do not run an engine in an enclosed area.• Do not operate the machine without the guards securelyin place. Ensure that all interlocks are attached, adjustedproperly, and functioning property.• Decrease the ground speed of the machine and usecaution when making turns and crossing roads andsidewalks.• Do not operate the machine while under the influenceof alcohol or drugs.• Ensure that the area is clear of other people beforeoperating the machine. Stop the machine if anyone entersthe area.• Excessive vibration from a trencher or a plow can cause atrench, an overhang, or a high bank to collapse, resultingin possible injury or death.• If your view of the work area is not clear, always have asignal person direct the movement of the machine.• Do not leave a running machine unattended. Stop theengine and remove the key whenever you leave themachine.• Use only Toro-approved attachments. Attachments canchange the stability and the operating characteristics ofthe machine.• Watch for traffic when operating the machine near oracross roadways.• Ensure that you operate the machine in areas where thereare no obstacles in close proximity to you. Failure tomaintain an adequate distance from trees, walls, and otherbarriers while operating the machine may result in injuryand/or damage. Operate the machine only in areas wherethere is sufficient clearance for you to safely maneuverthe product.4
