Under certain conditions, diesel fuel andfuel vapors are highly flammable andexplosive. A fire or explosion from fuelcan burn you and others and can causeproperty damage.• Use a funnel and fill the fuel tankoutdoors, in an open area, when theengine is off and is cold. Wipe up anyfuel that spills.• Do not fill the fuel tank completelyfull. Add fuel to the fuel tank until thelevel is 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6 to 13 mm)below the bottom of the filler neck. This empty space in the tank allowsthe fuel to expand.• Never smoke when handling fuel, and stay away from an open flame orwhere fuel fumes may be ignited bya spark.• Store fuel in a clean, safety-approvedcontainer and keep the cap in place.3. Install the fuel tank cap.Checking the TransmissionFluidThe front axle housing acts as the reservoir forthe transmission fluid. The transmission andaxle housing are shipped from the factory withapproximately 5 quarts (4.7 l) of Mobil 424hydraulic fluid. However, check the level oftransmission fluid before starting the engine forthe first time and daily thereafter.1. Position the machine on a level surface, lowerthe cutting units, and stop the engine.2. Remove the floor panel.3. Unscrewthedipstickcapfromthetransmissionfiller neck (Figure 27) and wipe it with a cleanrag.Figure 271. Transmission dipstick cap4. Screw the dipstick cap into the filler neck.5. Remove the dipstick and check level of thefluid.6. If the level is not within 1/2 inch (1.25 cm)from the groove in the dipstick, add enoughfluid to raise the level to the groove.Important: Do not overfill by more than1/4 inch (6 mm) above the groove.7. Screw the dipstick cap finger-tight onto thefiller neck. It is not necessary to tighten thecap with a wrench.Checking the HydraulicFluid LevelThe machine’s reservoir is filled at the factorywith approximately 7.5 U.S. gallons (13.2 l) ofhigh quality hydraulic fluid. Check the level ofthe hydraulic fluid before the engine is firststarted and daily thereafter. The recommendedreplacement fluid is as follows:Toro Premium Transmission/HydraulicTractor Fluid (Available in 5 gallon pails or 55gallon drums. See parts catalog or Toro distributorfor part numbers.)Alternate fluids: If the Toro fluid is not available, other petroleum-based Universal TractorHydraulic Fluids (UTHF) may be used, providedits specifications fall within the listed range forall the following material properties and it meetsindustry standards. We do not recommend theuse of synthetic fluid. Consult with your lubricantdistributor to identify a satisfactory product28
