Northstar Explorer 650 Installation and Operation Manual4812-3 Fuel consumption curvesA fuel consumption curve is a powerful tool forassessing your boat performance in differentconditions and for helping you to run at themost economical speed for the conditions. Fuelconsumption curves require engine RPM, whichrequires SmartCraft to be installed.12-3-1 Making a fuel consumption curveMaking a fuel consumption curve requiresrunning the boat in a straight line through theengine’s full RPM range for about 15 minutes. For your first curve, choose a calm day with lightwind and little current; have a typical load anda freshly cleaned hull. Then you can make fuelconsumption curves for different boat, weatheror sea conditions. Compare these with yourfirst curve to see how your boat’s performancechanges with conditions.Making a curve1 Start running the boat in a straight line.2 Press one or more times until theSetup menu is displayed, then select Fuel.3 Select Fuel consumption curve, thenselect New.4 Enter the comfortable maximum RPM youhave measured for the engine. Do not use themaker’s maximum RPM.5 The Explorer then asks you to set theminimum RPM. Set the throttle for minimumRPM; for a twin engine boat set both enginesto about the same minimum RPM.Now, do not change the engine speed. Waitfor about 60 seconds for the boat to stabilise, then press . Wait while the Explorerrecords the data.6 The Explorer then asks you to set the throttleto achieve a target RPM. For a twin engineboat set both engines to about the targetRPM. When the engine RPMs are correct, theTarget RPM box will turn green. Now, do notchange the engine speed. Wait for about 60seconds for the boat to stabilise, ensuring theTarget RPM box stays green. Then press. Wait while the Explorer records the data.7 The Explorer repeats the above step to recorddata up to the maximum RPM.Then the Explorer asks if you want to savethe curve. Select Yes. The Explorer asks for aname for the curve. Change the default nameif required, then press . The new curveis stored.NoteTo interrupt making the curve at any time, press.
