If you are not familiar with theproper and safe operation of a wood lathe, donot use it until the proper training andknowledge have been obtained.5. Always wear ANSI Z87.1 approved safetyglasses or face shield while using this lathe.(Everyday eyeglasses only have impactresistant lenses; they are not safety glasses.)7. Make certain the machine is properlygrounded.8. Before operating the machine, remove tie,rings, watches, other jewelry, and roll sleevesup past the elbows. Remove all loose clothingand confine long hair. Do not wear gloves.9. Keep the floor around the machine clean andfree of scrap material, oil and grease.10. Keep machine guards in place at all timeswhen the machine is in use. If removed formaintenance purposes, use extreme cautionand replace the guards immediately.11. Do not over reach. Maintain a balancedstance at all times, so that you do not fall orlean against rotating parts.12. Make all machine adjustments or maintenancewith the machine unplugged from the powersource.13. Use the right tool. Do not force a tool orattachment to do a job that it was not designedto do.14. Make certain the switch is in the OFF positionbefore connecting the machine to the powersupply.15. Give your work undivided attention. Lookingaround, carrying on a conversation and "horse-play" are careless acts that can result inserious injury.16. Keep visitors a safe distance from the workarea. Keep children away.17. Make your workshop child proof with padlocks,master switches or by removing starter keys.18. Maintain a balanced stance at all times so thatyou do not fall onto moving parts. Do notoverreach or use excessive force to performany machine operation.19. Use recommended accessories; improperaccessories may be hazardous.20. Some dust created by power sanding, sawing,grinding, drilling and other constructionactivities contain chemicals known to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductiveharm. Some examples of these chemicals are:• Lead from lead based paint.• Crystalline silica from bricks, cement andother masonry products.• Arsenic and chromium from chemicallytreated lumber.Your risk of exposure varies, depending onhow often you do this type of work. To reduceyour exposure to these chemicals, work in awell-ventilated area and work with approvedsafety equipment, such as face or dust masksthat are specifically designed to filter outmicroscopic particles.21. Do not operate this lathe while under theinfluence of drugs, alcohol or any medication.22. Keep tools sharp and clean for safe and bestperformance. Dull tools can grab in theworkpiece and be jerked from the operator'shands, causing serious injury.23. Check the condition of the stock to be turned.Make sure it is free of knots, warpage,checked ends, improperly made or cured gluejoints and other conditions which can cause itto be thrown out of the lathe.24. Securely fasten spur and live centers to thematerial being used.25. Check centers and tapers in the headstockand tailstock to be sure they are free of dirt orrust, and oil lightly before inserting centers.26. Test each set-up by revolving the workpieceby hand to ensure it clears the tool rest andbed. Check the setup at the lowest speedbefore increasing to operating speed.
