10The inverter takes the 1-phase input from thepower cord and converts it to the 3-phase outputrequired by the drive motor. The lathe comes with a plug designed for use on acircuit with a grounded outlet that looks similar tothe one pictured in Figure 6-1.Before connecting to power source, be sure switchis in off position. It is recommended that the lathe be connected to adedicated 15 amp circuit with a circuit breaker orfuse. If connected to a circuit protected by fuses, use time delay fuse marked “D”. Local codestake precedence over recommendations.6.1 GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONSThis tool must be grounded. In the event of amalfunction or breakdown, grounding provides apath of least resistance for electric current toreduce the risk of electric shock. This tool isequipped with an electric cord having anequipment-grounding conductor and a groundingplug. The plug must be inserted into an appropriateoutlet that is properly installed and grounded inaccordance with all local codes and ordinances.Improper connection of theequipment-grounding conductor can result in arisk of electric shock. Check with a qualifiedelectrician or service person if you are in doubtas to whether the outlet is properly grounded.Do not modify the plug provided with the tool –if it will not fit the outlet, have a proper outletinstalled by a qualified electrician. The conductor with insulation having an outersurface that is green with or without yellow stripesis the equipment-grounding conductor. If repair orreplacement of the electric cord or plug isnecessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal.Use only 3-wire extension cords that have 3-pronggrounding plugs and 3-pole receptacles that acceptthe tool's plug.Repair or replace damaged or worn cordimmediately.6.2 230V operationAs received from the factory, the JWL-1840EVS isready to run at 230-volt operation. This tool isintended for use on a circuit that has an outlet thatlooks like the one illustrated in A, Figure 6-1.IMPORTANT: The JWL-1840EVS Lathe cannot berun on a GFCI circuit.Figure 6-1: groundingA lightning strike or powersurge may cause inverter failure. When lathe isnot in use, disconnect power plug, or have a 3-or 4-pole disconnect installed on the powerside.6.3 Extension cordsThe use of extension cords is discouraged; try toposition equipment within reach of the powersource. If an extension cord becomes necessary,be sure it is heavy enough to carry the current yourproduct will draw. An undersized cord will cause adrop in line voltage resulting in loss of power andoverheating.Table 1 shows recommended size to usedepending on cord length and nameplate ampererating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. Thesmaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.AmpereRating Volts Total length ofcord in feetMoreThanNotMoreThan120240255050100100200150300AWG00 06 18 16 16 1406 10 18 16 14 1210 12 16 16 14 1212 16 14 12 NotRecommendedExtension Cord RecommendationsTable 1
