This precaution maybe particularly important in rural areas.The Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) assigned to each terminal device provides an indication of themaximum number of terminals allowed to be connected to a telephone interface. The termination on aninterface may consist of any combination of devices subject only to the requirement that the sum of the RingerEquivalence Numbers of all the devices does not exceed 5.Laser safety statementAll Gateway systems equipped with CD and DVD drives comply with the appropriate safety standards, includingIEC 825. The laser devices in these components are classified as “Class 1 Laser Products” under a US Departmentof Health and Human Services (DHHS) Radiation Performance Standard. Should the unit ever need servicing,contact an authorized service location.Television antenna connectors protection (for systemsfitted with TV/cable TV tuner cards)External television antenna groundingIf an outside antenna or cable system is to be connected to your Gateway PC, make sure that the antenna orcable system is electrically grounded to provide some protection against voltage surges and static charges.Article 810 of the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPSA 70, provides information with regard to propergrounding of the mast and supporting structure, grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna discharge unit, sizeof grounding conductors, location of antenna discharge unit, connection to grounding electrodes, andrequirements for the grounding electrode.Lightning protectionFor added protection of any Gateway product during a lightning storm or when it is left unattended or unusedfor long periods of time, unplug the product from the wall outlet and disconnect the antenna or cable system.Warning To avoid electrical shock or equipment malfunction do not attempt tomake electrical ground connections by yourself. Contact theappropriate inspection authority or an electrician, as appropriate.Warning Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures otherthan those specified in this manual may result in hazardous radiationexposure. To prevent exposure to laser beams, do not try to open theenclosure of a CD or DVD drive.
