GPSMAP 60CSx Owner’s Manual 49M AIN PAGES >The compass ring is an electronic compass thatfunctions like a magnetic compass when you arestationary. When you are moving and reach a pre-setspeed, it uses data from the GPS receiver to maintainyour heading. When you stop (after a pre-set time), itagain operates like a magnetic compass. The compassring is especially helpful when using a paper mapor chart with your GPSMAP 60CSx for navigation.When the electronic compass is on, a compass iconappears in the status bar.Using the Electronic CompassWhen you turn the electronic compass off, it stays offuntil you turn it on again. However, sometimes whenyou turn the electronic compass on, the GPSmap60CSx overrides the compass and uses the GPSreceiver to track your heading. In fact, when you aremoving at a steady rate, the GPS receiver operatesthe compass. When stationary, the electronic compassis active to provide you accurate headings. You cancustomize the criteria for switching between theelectronic compass and the GPS as explained in theHeading setup section on page 75.To turn the electronic compass on or off:1. Press and hold the PAGE key to turn theelectronic compass on or off. The CompassIcon appears in the status bar when theelectronic compass is on. When you are notusing the electronic compass, turn it off toconserve batteries. When it is turned off, theunit uses the GPS receiver for navigation.2. Hold the GPSMAP 60CSx level to get anaccurate electronic compass reading. Youcan obtain the most accurate reading if itis calibrated. (See the following page forcalibration instructions.)Setting the speed and time for CompassAuto On/Off:1. Press MENU twice to open the Main Menu.2. Highlight Setup, and press ENTER to openthe Setup Menu.3. Highlight the Heading icon, and press ENTERto open the Heading Setup Page.4. Highlight the Switch to compass headingwhen below field, and press ENTER.
