2.8 Storage PresentationActive Directory SupportThe ETERNUS CS800 supports ADS (Active Directory Services) as well as ACLs (Access ControlLists). This provides the following benefits:l Compatibility with CIFS/SMB domains - NAS shares are able to join CIFS/SMB domainsand use domain authentication.l Precise control of file system permissions - Administrators can specify which usersand groups can perform what actions.l Robust administrative support - Administrators have the same implicit permissions asthey do in Windows operating systems.Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, and Windows 2012 R2 are supported for ActiveDirectory domain membership. When you create a CIFS/SMB share, the initial permissions are the same as thedefault permissions for a Windows 2003 share with the addition of an ACE (AccessControl Entry) that permits full access to the share for all authenticated users.Administrators can choose to remove this full access ACE, set up custom permissions,or leave the ACL (Access Control List) as is if the server is set up in a fully trustedenvironment.2.8.2.2 NFS ProtocolThe NFS (Network File System) protocol allows network users to access shared files storedon computers of different types. NFS provides access to shared files through an interfacecalled the Virtual File System (VFS) that runs on top of TCP/IP. With NFS, computersconnected to a network operate as clients while accessing remote files, and as serverswhile providing remote users access to local shared files. This protocol is used with UNIXand Linux networks. It can also be used with Windows networks.2.8.2.3 Application Specific ProtocolThe Application Specific Protocol allows users to create Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN)shares on an ETERNUS CS800 system. RMAN provides the foundation for efficiently backingup and recovering an Oracle database.2.8.3 OpenStorage (OST)With the OST presentation, the ETERNUS CS800 system presents storage servers to aSymantec NetBackup or Backup Exec media server through a specific Symantec protocol. Astorage server consists of logical storage units (LSUs), which are similar to directories in aNAS file system or tape cartridges in a VTL partition.ETERNUS CS800 35
