Write down the serial numberlocated inside the printer. You will need this toregister your products.Plug the power cord into the back of the printerand connect the other end to a power outlet.Press the POWER button. The printer willinitialize.Lower the front cover. Raise the top cover.Lower the inner cover.The print head holder automatically moves tothe center. Remove the protective tape.43213 Install the Print HeadRemove the print head from its package.Remove the orange protective cap from theprint head.NOTE: Do not touch the print head nozzles andthe electrical contacts.Raise the print head lock lever.Slide the print head into the holder.The print head will rest at a slight angle.Lower the print head lock lever and press itdown until it clicks into place.543214 Install the Ink TanksPeel back the orange tab and completelyremove the plastic wrapper from the Yellow InkTank (BCI-6Y).Twist off and discard the orange protective cap.NOTE: To avoid spilling ink, never press on thesides of an ink tank.Insert the ink tank into the correct slot.(Refer to the color guide on the print head locklever.)Press down until the ink tank clicks into place.Insert the remaining seven ink tanks into theirassigned slots.Close (a) the inner cover and then (b) the topcover. Lift open the paper support and extendthe paper output tray.IMPORTANT: Be sure to close the inner covercompletely, or the paper will not feed properly.NOTE: The printer will perform a print headcleaning. Wait until the POWER lamp displays asteady green light before proceeding.543215 Connect the Printerand Load PaperIMPORTANT: Be sure the printer is off beforecontinuing, or the computer will attempt toinstall the printer driver before the printer isready.TURN THE PRINTER OFF.Connect one end of the USB cable to thecomputer, the other to the appropriate USBport on the printer.If your computer and operating system supportUSB 2.0 Hi-Speed, use the top port. Otherwise,use the bottom port.NOTE: The iP8500 Series Photo Printer isequipped with both USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and USBports. If you do not know your USB versionnumber, connect using the lower port.Do not switch port after installation.Remove the shipping tape from the paperguide. Pinch the paper guide and slide it to theleft.
