Replacing the Cartridges 8-5Maintenance8Replacing the CartridgesThis section describes how to remove used cartridges and replace them with newones.IMPORTANTIf printout becomes faint or inconsistent, the reason may be that the lifetime of the tonercartridge has been reached even when a message does not appear. Do not continue touse the toner cartridge when there is a deterioration in the print quality.NOTE• The lifetime of toner cartridges for this machine is indicated as follows. The number ofpages is based on printing a typical document (with a printing ratio of approximately 5 %and print density set to default).- Black (EP-87 Toner Cartridge Black): Approx. 5,000 pages for printing paper in size ofA4 or Letter.- Yellow, magenta, cyan (EP-87 Toner Cartridge Yellow, EP-87 Toner Cartridge Magenta,EP-87 Toner Cartridge Cyan): Approx. 4,000 pages for printing paper in size of A4 orLetter.• Before handling the cartridge, see the precautions in "Storing Toner Cartridges," on p.8-14.Replacing the Toner CartridgesWhen * CART> and then * CARTRIDGE> appears inthe LCD, replace the toner cartridge of the indicated color with a new tonercartridge.* Indicates either "C", "M", "Y", or "K".WARNINGDo not burn or throw used toner cartridges into open flames, as this may causethe toner remaining inside the cartridges to ignite resulting in burns or a fire.CAUTIONIf toner gets onto your hands or clothing, wash it off immediately with coldwater. Do not use warm water as this may set the toner permanently, and youmay not be able to remove the toner stains.IMPORTANTUse only toner cartridges intended for use with this machine.
