263 . . .–––Section 3Shifting Into P (Park)CAUTIONIf you do not park your vehicleproperly, it can roll. If you leavethe engine running, it couldmove quickly. You or otherscould be injured. To be sure thevehicle does not move, followthe steps below.In order to shift into P (Park), dothe following:1. Apply the regular brakes.2. Set the parking brake firmly.3. Shift into P (Park).Pull the shift lever toward you,then move it up as far as it willgo.4. Turn off the ignition andremove the key.If you must leave your vehicle withthe engine running, check that theshift lever is fully in P (Park). To dothis, hold down the brake pedaland try to move the shift leverwithout first pulling it toward you.If you can, it means that the shiftlever was not fully locked inP (Park).Be sure the shift lever is in P (Park)and the parking brake is firmlyapplied when you leave yourvehicle.Shifting Out of P (Park)Your vehicle has an automatictransmission shift lock controlsystem. With the engine running,you have to fully apply the regularbrakes before you can shift out ofP (Park).This system is designed to preventignition key removal unless theshift lever is in P (Park) and theshift lever is fully released.The shift lock control system maynot operate if your vehicle has adead or low-voltage battery.If the vehicle's battery is dead,jump start the vehicle.
