8IntroductionOn DVD-RAM discsUse only DVD-RAM discs that comply with DVD-RAM standard Version 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2.The recorder cannot record on a disc formatted in anyother standard. When using such a disc, initialize it byusing the disc-format function of this recorder.The recorder may not record, dub, or edit some DVD-RAM discs, because they are edited/recorded withanother manufacturer’s equipment or PC, contain alarge number of titles, or have little remaining capacity.Also, a DVD-RAM disc may not be edited or recordedif its title contains still pictures.DVD-RAM discs formatted in UDF2.0 on a PC are notcompatible with this recorder. Before using thesediscs, initialize them on this recorder.This recorder complies with current copyrightprotection technology and can copy a disc only whenthe disc permits copying once. When there is noindication on the disc, copying will not be allowed.DVD-RAM discs with cartridges arerecommended for recording.Two types of DVD-RAM discs areavailable: ones with cartridges and oneswithout cartridges. You can use either ofthem with this recorder, but the formerones are recommended.In order to record highly detailed data, make sure thedisc is clean. DVD-RAM discs with cartridges areeasier to handle in this regard.Do not open the cartridge shutter. The disc may notplay, or may not be recorded or edited once itbecomes dirty.There are two types of DVD-RAM cartridges;removable (TYPE 2/4) and not removable (TYPE 1). Itis recommended you do not remove the disc evenwhen you can.Refer to the instruction manual that comes with thedisc if it is absolutely necessary to remove the disc.Some commercially available cartridge discs cannotbe recorded or edited once the inside discs areremoved.To protect recorded contentsSlide the write-protect tab to“PROTECT” with something smallenough. The disc can play, butcannot be edited or erased. Refer tothe instructions that come with thedisc.When using a disc without acartridge (commerciallyavailable discs)Discs without cartridges can easilyattract fingerprints and dust, whichis the reason they are not recommended. If you cannotavoid using them, handle with proper care.When you write in a title column on a disc, use a penwith a soft tip.
