Electrical SystemMaintenanceElectrical System Safety• Disconnect the battery before repairing themachine. Disconnect the negative terminal firstand the positive last. Connect the positive terminalfirst and the negative last.• Charge the battery in an open, well-ventilatedarea, away from sparks and flames. Unplug thecharger before connecting or disconnecting thebattery. Wear protective clothing and use insulatedtools.Servicing the BatteryService Interval: MonthlyDANGERBattery electrolyte contains sulfuric acidwhich is fatal if consumed and causes severeburns.Do not drink electrolyte and avoid contactwith skin, eyes or clothing. Wear safetyglasses to shield your eyes and rubber glovesto protect your hands.Removing the BatteryWARNINGIncorrectly removing the cables from batterycould damage the machine and cables, causing sparks. Sparks can cause the batterygasses to explode, resulting in personalinjury.• Always disconnect the negative (black)battery cable before disconnecting thepositive (red) cable.• Always connect the positive (red) batterycable before connecting the negative(black) cable.1. Park the machine on a level surface, move thespeed-control lever to the NEUTRAL position, disengage the blade-control switch (PTO), andengage the parking brake.2. Shut off the engine, remove the key, and waitfor all moving parts to stop before leaving theoperating position.3. Disconnect the negative battery cable (black)from the negative (-) battery terminal (Figure 47).4. Slide the red terminal boot off the positive (red)battery terminal and remove the positive (+)battery cable (Figure 47).5. Remove the wing nuts securing the J-hooks(Figure 47).6. Remove the clamp (Figure 47).7. Remove the battery.g025144Figure 471. Negative (black) batterycable4. Clamp2. Wing nut 5. Positive (red) battery cable3. J-hookCharging the BatteryWARNINGCharging the battery produces gasses thatcan explode.Never smoke near the battery and keep sparksand flames away from the battery.Important: Always keep the battery fully charged(1.265 specific gravity). This is especiallyimportant to prevent battery damage when thetemperature is below 0°C (32°F).1. Remove the battery from the chassis; refer toRemoving the Battery (page 41).2. Charge the battery for 10 to 15 minutes at 25 to30 A or for 30 minutes at 10 A.Note: Do not overcharge the battery.3. When the battery is fully charged, unplugthe charger from the electrical outlet, thendisconnect the charger leads from the batteryposts (Figure 48).4. Install the battery in the machine and connectthe battery cables; refer to Installing the Battery(page 42).Note: Do not run the machine with the batterydisconnected; electrical damage may occur.41
