Rock and frost toothArrangements of the Digging TeethThe arrangement of digging teeth involves both where andhow each tooth is attached to the digging chain. Use thefollowing guidelines when you select the arrangements ofteeth:• Install teeth that are the same width and are spacedequally around the chain.• Use fewer teeth on the chain when you are operating thetrencher in wet clay or gumbo.• Use more teeth on the chain when you are operating thetrencher in sandy loam or rocky ground.Note: You can use different types and combinations of teethto increase productivity in various digging conditions. Therock and frost teeth or the shark teeth penetrate the soil well, and the cupped teeth help to remove the soil. Try severalcombinations to determine the one best suited for your site.Combinations of Boom, Chain, and Teeth for Various Soil Types and ConditionsSoil Type Chain Type Digging Teeth TypeHeavy DutyAnti-backflexH-Plate Cup Cutter Rock/FrostMining BitShark MixedSand XSandy Loam XLoose Shale X XTopsoil XCaliche (Hard) X X X X XClay (Gumbo) X XCoral X X X XRock (Loose) X X X XAsphalt X X X XHard Clay X X X X XFrozen Soil X X X X XNote: You need a rock wheel to cut solid rock or concrete.14
