TroubleshootingThere are a number of factors that can contribute to un-satisfactory quality of cut, some of which may be turfconditions. Turf conditions such as excessive thatch,“sponginess” or attempting to cut off too much grassheight may not always be overcome by adjusting thecutting unit. It is important to remember that the lowerthe height–of–cut, the more critical these factors are.See Adjustments and Service and Repairs sections fordetailed adjustments and repair information.Cutting UnitsFactors That Can Affect Quality of CutFactor Possible Problem/CorrectionTire pressure Check pressure of all tires. Pressure must be equal onboth front tires. Adjust pressure as necessary.See General section in Chapter 6 – Wheels andBrakes.Governed engine speed Check maximum governed engine speed. Adjustengine to specifications if necessary.See Adjustments section in Chapter 3 or 4 – Vanguardor Perkins Engine.Reel bearing condition Check bearings for wear and replace if necessary.Make sure bearing housings are secured properly.Keep bearings well lubricated.See Reel and Bearing Removal and Installation.Reel and bedknife sharpness A reel and/or bedknife that has rounded cutting edgesor ”rifling (grooved or wavy appearance) cannot becorrected by tightening the bedknife to reel contact.Grind reel to remove taper and/or rifling. Grindbedknife to sharpen and/or remove rifling. The most common cause of rifling is bedknife to reelcontact that is too tight.A new bedknife must be ground or backlappedafter installation to the bedbar.Bedknife to reel adjustment Check bedknife to reel contact daily. The bedknifemust have light contact across the entire reel. Nocontact will dull the cutting edges. Excessive contactaccelerates wear of both edges. Quality of cut isadversely affected by both conditions (see Bedknife toReel Adjustment).Slightly dull cutting edges may be corrected bybacklapping (see Backlapping).Excessively dull cutting edges must be corrected bygrinding the reel and bedknife (see Preparing Reel forGrinding).Greensmaster 3200/3200–D Page 8 – 7 Cutting Units
