TASCAM US-122 — 237 – A Sample Recording Session in CubasisOkay. You’ve got your US-122 con-nected to your computer, and you’veloaded the drivers. Your audio softwareis loaded, and you’re ready to cut sometracks. Let’s walk through a typicalrecording session with the US-122 andCubasis.NOTEThis chapter is intended as a quick startguide toward recording and mixing withSteinberg Cubasis and the US-122. It is in noway meant to be a comprehensive guide toCubasis. For full details on the Cubasisapplication, please refer to the SteinbergCubasis manual on the US-122 CD. You’llfind Windows and MacOS versions.Setting UpBefore starting Cubasis, make sure thatthe US-122 is connected to your com-puter’s USB port, and that the device hasbeen initialized.NOTEWhen launching or closing the application(e.g. Cubasis VST), turn down the LINEOUT and PHONES controls.When Cubasis VST is running, do notdisconnect or connect the cables of theUS-122 or any other USB equipment.If you launch Cubasis or another audioprogram before the US-122 has been ini-tialized, the software will not “see” theUS-122 and you will not be able to oper-ate the software’s controls, performMIDI I/O, or record or play back audio.Likewise, many software applicationsdon’t expect that devices will beremoved while the program is running.So make sure to exit your audio applica-tion programs before disconnecting theUS-122.It is also advisable, as with all audiodevices, that you turn your amplifier orpowered monitors off until the programis up and running, to avoid audio spikes.Once you are certain that the US-122 isup and running, start the Cubasis appli-cation by double- clicking on its icon onthe screen. Open the Audio ControlPanel and select the US-122 as youraudio device (see “Selecting the US-122as your audio device” in previous chap-ter.) If you don’t see the US-122 listed inyour Audio Control Panel, make sure it’sbeen installed correctly by referring tothe section on Troubleshooting.Select the ASIO Control Panel, andchoose a sample Rate (44.1 kHz or48 kHz). Your Audio Clock Sourceshould be set to internal, unless you’reusing an S/PDIF digital input fromanother audio interface, or otherwiseslaving Cubasis to an external source.Select the Disk Caching Scheme. Option1 is Virtual Tape Recorder, used prima-rily when your tracks are linear and oflonger duration. Option 2 corresponds toAudio Sequencer, and is more applicablewhen using loops and shorter segmentsof audio. Option 3, Tape Recorder/Sequencer, is your best choice whenworking with a combination of shortaudio clips and longer linear tracks. (Forfurther information on Disk Caching,please refer to the Cubasis VST manual.)If you’re using the US-122’s internalMIDI interface, you’ll need to enable it
