16 — TASCAM US-1224 – Hooking up Audio and MIDI to the US-122Hooking up audioTo monitor output from your computer, connect the analog outputs of the US-122 to your mixer, amplifier or poweredmonitors. Output volume is controlledby the LINE OUT level control. To record audio from the US-122 intoyour computer, simply connect a deviceto the appropriate input. Microphonesshould be plugged into the L and R MICIN XLR inputs.NOTEThe US-122 can supply phantom power, soif you’re using condenser microphones, youwill not need an external preamp or powersupply. You can connect line-level sources (e.g.keyboards and sound modules) into oneof the two LINE/GUITAR IN jacks (L orR). If you wish to plug in a guitar, bass,or other high-impedance source, simplymove the appropriate sliding switch tothe GUITAR position. The inputs of the L and R channels areavailable as either balanced XLR mic-level inputs, or balanced (1/4") line-levelinputs (unbalanced when used as guitarinputs). While it’s possible to use both mic andline level analog inputs simultaneouslyon either input, in actual practice this isnot recommended, as the signal level ofthe inputs will be summed and verylikely interfere with each other.Input level is regulated by the INPUTlevel controls. The INPUT level controlsdirectly affect the input level at the A/Dconverters on the US-122, so it’s advis-able to use the SIGNAL and OVER indi-cators to help set your levels. Unlikeanalog tape, when recording digitalaudio, it’s important to keep your inputlevel close to 0dB, but never to exceed it.If the input level is too high, the audiosignal will clip - not a desirable sound. Ifthe input level is too low, then thedynamic range of which the US-122’s A/D converters are capable is not beingused, and the signal will be closer to thenoise floor than it needs to be. In eithercase, this cannot be fixed after the trackshave been recorded, so it’s important tomake this adjustment carefully.Hooking up MIDIThe MIDI IN and OUT jacks give you 16channels of MIDI I/O. Simply connectthe MIDI OUT of your keyboard orother device to the MIDI IN jack on theUS-122, and vice versa. If you’ve got aMIDI sync box, you can use the MIDIports to send and receive MTC (MIDITime Code). This allows you to synctracks from your MTC-capable Portastu-dio, DTRS multitrack, or any othermachine that accepts timecode with yourdigital audio software, transferringtracks back and forth for editing and pro-cessing.
