Navigation SetupThe navigation setup submenu page is used toselect units of measurement for position formats, mapdatums, CDI scale, units, and heading, and speed filterinformation.Position FormatsThe default position format for the GPS 48 is lati-tude and longitude in degrees and minutes(hdddºmm.mmm’). You may also select degrees, min-utes and seconds (hdddºmm’ss.s’’); degrees only(hddd.dddddº); UTM/UPS coordinates; or British,German, Irish, Maidenhead, Swedish, Swiss, or Taiwan,or User grid formats.To select a position format:1. Highlight the ‘POSITION FRMT’ field, and press E.Select the desired setting, and press E.User Grid Position FormatThe user grid option lets you create a user definedposition format by establishing factors such as longi-tude of origin, scale, and false Easting or Northing.To define a user grid:1. Select ‘User Grid’, and press E. Enter values forlongitude origin, scale, and false Easting andNorthing, and press E. Highlight ‘SAVE?’, andpress E.Map DatumsThe ‘MAP DATUM’ field comes with a WGS 84default setting. Although 106 total map datums areavailable for use (see Appendix D for map datums),you should only change the datum if you are usingmaps or charts that specify a different datum thanWGS 84.49The position format maybe set to display yourchoice of many formats.Note: degree and minutesis the default setting.REFERENCENavigationSetup &User GridThe default map datumcovers world-wide naviga-tion. However, if you areusing a paper map orchart which uses a differ-ent map datum than WGS84, then you may wish toswitch to that datum.
