ROUTING USING FEATHERBOARDS(Fig. 27)Featherboards are helpful in controlling theworkpiece while routing and assisting inkeeping the workpiece flat on the tabletop. The tabletop featherboard combined with thefence featherboard helps keep the workpiecepressed against the fence and tabletop. Thebest location for the featherboards variesaccording to your application, workpiece size, and other factors.1. Loosen clamping knobs (21) onfeatherboard(s) (22) until featherboard(s)are adjustable.2. Place the workpiece on the router table (1)so that it is squarely against the fenceassembly (C).3. Position the featherboard(s) (22) snuglyagainst the workpiece and tighten theclamping knobs (21).4. The workpiece should move with someresistance but without requiring a greateffort.5. For wider workpieces, the tabletopfeatherboard cannot be used. The secondfeatherboard may also be positioned on thefence, if desired.Fig. 27AWARNING I Never let go of the-t, I workpiece when routinguntil the cut has been completed and theworkpiece is completely clear of the bit,Such precautionary safety measures reducethe risk of personal injury and/or propertydamage., Featherboards aid in holding the workpiecein position when routing on a router table., They are NOT intended to hold theworkpiece in place alone when theworkpiece is in contact with the bit, orat any other time when the bit is turning.26
